I thought it was quite fascinating a couple of weeks ago when some notable medical professionals took it upon themselves to publish an open letter to the National Health Service questioning the public funding of complementary therapies immediately prior to Prince Charles delivering his paper to the World Health Organisation in Geneva advocating such treatments.
The Prince has clearly been an advocate of complementary therapies for some 20 years, and there is increasing scientific evidence to support some treatments to the extent that the UK Government is moved towards regulating some such as acupuncture.
What I thought was most revealing was that the 13 medical scientists miscalculated the issue in the manner and tone of their concerns. It came across as a direct rejection of any the funding for alternatives to conventional western medicine. I believe that they did their cause more harm than good.
Surely we need the health and well-being of our people to be a team effort. The conventional medical profession needs to work closer with the complemetary therapists to provide the best range of options and treatments for an individual's condition.
This is one major reason why I have embarked upon this career.
I now hope that reasoned discussions will continue to promote complementary therapies through NHS funding and that Governments take up Prince Charles' challenge for an integrated approach for healthcare.
